Extended Audio Description (Prerecorded)
Where pauses in foreground audio are insufficient to allow audio descriptions to convey the sense of the video, extended audio description is provided for all prerecorded video content in synchronized media.
In plain language
When a video's natural pauses aren't long enough to fit a full spoken description of what's happening visually, the video should pause on its own to make room for a longer description.
Why it matters
Some scenes have too much important visual information (like fast, detailed diagrams) to describe during the normal gaps in dialogue. Without extending the video to make room, a blind viewer only gets a rushed, incomplete description — or none at all.
In practice
Fails this criterion
A physics lecture shows a professor quickly sketching diagrams while talking non-stop, with no pauses and no extended description — blind viewers have no idea what's on the board.
Meets this criterion
The same lecture pauses briefly after each diagram, during which an extended narration describes exactly what was drawn, before playback resumes.
Test it yourself
Watch a video with a lot of fast visual detail and little natural pause in the dialogue. Does the video pause to add a fuller description, or does the visual information just go unexplained?
